WELCOME:

Welcome to Advanced Placement Statistics.  I am so excited to learn and discover with the exceptional students that comprise AP Statistics course.

COURSE CONTENT:

Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes:

1.  Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patterns.

2.  Sampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study

3.  Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability & simulation

4.  Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses

Students who successfully complete the course and exam may receive credit, advanced placement or both for a one-semester introductory college statistics course.  This does not necessarily imply that the high school course should be one semester (in fact, at GVHS, this course is a two-semester course).  According to the College Board, each high school may determine the length of its AP Statistics course to best serve the needs of its students.  The complete College Board Statistics Course Description can be found at http://media.collegeboard.com/

For more details on essential course resources, course audit information, and AP exam information & resources, please go to the College Board AP Statistics home page here.

COURSE PREREQUISITE:

In order to qualify for placement into AP Statistics at GVHS, students must (1) be a senior; and (2) earn a C or better in Algebra II or any other subsequent higher-level mathematics course offered at GVHS.

In order to remain in/complete the course, the student must earn a C or better by the end of the fall semester.  If a student earns lower than a C at the end of the first semester, the student may be required to drop the course.

ASSIGNMENTS & GRADES:

I try my best to post assignments in Infinite Campus daily.  So if you need to double-check on anything to do with assignments or grades, please log into your Infinite Campus account here.

CALCULATORS:

A graphing calculator is required for this course.  Students will not be successful in the course without one.  Really.  I'm not exaggerating.  Students will use their graphing calculator almost daily, on each and every class test, and on the AP College Board exam in May.  I highly recommend a TI 84 or 84+ (or any of the 84 series... TI even has cool color ones out now).  Also acceptable are TI 89's and TI Nspires.  But #1 on my list:  TI 84's.

Students may purchase a graphing calculator (they run anywhere from $110 to $180) or they may check one out from GVHS's Library (like they check out their textbooks).  First come, first served; so get there soon if you need one.  NOTE:  To check out a calculator from the Library, the student MUST have a check out form (which the student may obtain from their teacher only; the library does not have this form).  The form must be signed by the student as well as a parent/guardian.

Classroom Donations:  If you or your family are willing and able to donate (something small or large) to our classroom, please check out my DONATIONS TO OUR CLASSES page on this website.  Your contributions are much appreciated by me as well as my students.  Thank you for your consideration.
