Below you will find a message from our band director, Mr. Brooks:
Hello Hart District Band & Colorguard Families,
We hope that your start to summer is going well, and we know that many of you have questions about not only school resuming, but the status of our summer band and colorguard camps. The Hart District is still operating under strict guidelines from the Los Angeles County Department of Health due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Working within these guidelines, the Hart District has allowed for a very limited reopening of athletic programs that we hoped would allow for some sort of summer band and colorguard camps to take place at our high schools.
On June 26th all of the High School Band Directors in the Hart District met to discuss what our camps would look like this summer and the feasibility of a return to band activities. Unfortunately, as we analyzed the guidelines and restrictions that would be in place, the high school band directors have determined that it is not possible to hold any summer band and colorguard camps for this summer. Here is a listing of just some of the restrictions that would make holding our camps unattainable at this time:
Physical activities are to be limited to conditioning activities only
Students must be socially distanced at a minimum of 6-foot intervals at all times
Students are to wear masks while participating in all activities
Student are not allowed to be in groups of larger than 10 students at this time
These 10-student pods must stay the same for the time being and students are not allowed to co-mingle with the other pods
Extensive cleaning and sanitization must take place between each pod of students having practice
Students are not allowed to play their instruments indoors as of now. It is still unclear if outdoor playing is allowed.
As can be seen, the rules that are in place for student safety would not allow us to provide an authentic or meaningful band camp experience for the students of the Hart District.
The decision to not hold camps was unanimous by all of the high school directors and is supported by Hart District Administration. We hope to resume normal band and colorguard activities on each of our campuses in conjunction with the start of school on August 11th. By that time, we hope to have more clarity on what specific band activities are allowed and are hopeful that some County restrictions will have been eased allowing for students to fully participate in band and colorguard.
