4/22/2020 UPDATES:

- NEW NHS APPLICANTS, SPRING 2020:  The Faculty Council (five members of GVHS faculty) reviewed all new applications for Spring 2020 earlier this week. New applicants received an email from me (Mrs. Flynn, NHS Advisor) this week (week of 4/22/2020) notifying them of their application status (if it was approved or if it was not approved). Please be sure to check your Hart District email. If you have not received an email from me regarding your membership application this week, please email me as soon as possible.  NOTE:  I know some of you did not receive an NHS t-shirt yet. Unfortunately we will have to get you your NHS t-shirt once school resumes in the Fall. I'm sorry for the delay.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Flynn, NHS Advisor, at eflynn@hartdistrict.org

- INDUCTION CEREMONY RESCHEDULED:  Unfortunately due to social distancing and remote learning, we were unable to hold our usual Spring NHS Induction ceremony. So, our Spring NHS Induction has been postponed until September 22, 2020. It will be held in the Library, starting at 6:00 pm. All GVHS NHS students who would have been inducted at our Spring 2020 Induction ceremony will be inducted at the (rescheduled) September 22nd ceremony. Students will receive an invitation with full details in August, 2020. NOTE: If you are a current (as of Spring 2020) SENIOR in NHS, and if you have not yet been inducted (you have not yet attended an induction ceremony), your induction requirement is waived. This waiver only applies to current seniors.  Our regular Spring Induction ceremony for school year 2020/2021 will be held on April 13, 2021 at 6:00 pm in the Library.  Please make note of both of these dates on your calendar.  As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Flynn.

- OFFICER ELECTION PROCESS (FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2020/2021):  Usually, we hold officer elections in the Spring for the subsequent school-year. So we would have normally had our monthly meeting on April 1st where all officer candidates (for school-year 2020/2021) would have each made a 1-2 minute speech, introducing themselves and their platform. Following their speeches, we would have held our officer election (for school year 2020/2021), with each NHS member casting their vote. Votes would have been tallied and results announced that afternoon.  Unfortunately, we were unable to follow this process this semester as we were already into our remote learning on April 1st. So this year, we will coordinate our officer elections remotely via this Google Classroom. Please see the GVHS NHS Google Classroom for details.  You should have received a join code to the Google Classroom via REMIND and/or an email from Mrs. Flynn.

- SPRING SERVICE HOURS WAIVEDDue to the myriad of extenuating circumstances related to the world-wide pandemic, GVHS NHS is waiving the requirement of service hours for Spring 2020. NHS members are not required to satisfy any service hours for Spring 2020 to remain a member in good standing in GVHS's NHS. However, as always & as of 4/22/2020, minimum GPA requirements remain in place (to maintain good standing in NHS). The minimum weighted GPA requirement for NHS membership is 3.5 or higher.  As far as service hours for Fall 2020 semester, as of now (4/22/2020), the requirement stands. In order for NHS members to remain in good standing, members must satisfy a total of ten service hours (5 hours on-site at GVHS and 5 off-site). Fall 2020 service hours will be due in December 2020 (the specific date will be determined once the 2020/2021 school year begins in August). Please check back here for the specific due date for Fall 2020 service hours.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Flynn.

- SENIORS ONLY, NHS GRADUATION RECOGNITION (SASHES, CORDS):  Graduating Seniors, as of today (4/22/2020), it is unknown if there will be a graduation ceremony and/or what graduation will look like. I know some of you had already paid Vince (ASB) for your NHS graduation recognition and some of you had not yet paid Vince.  IF you HAVE ALREADY PAID Vince for your NHS graduation recognition (sash or cord), please fill out the Google form in the NHS Google Classroom indicating if you want a full refund OR if you still want your NHS graduation recognition. NOTE: If you still want it, please know that it is likely that you will not actually get your graduation recognition until July/August/September - ish.  IF you HAVE NOT ALREADY PAID Vince for your NHS graduation recognition, the NHS national office is opening it's store to the public, meaning students can go directly to NHS and buy their own sash or cord (this has never been done previously; students have always been required to get their graduation recognition through their school's advisor). I'm not sure how long the NHS national office will continue to open it's store to the public. So if you are interested in this option, please go to the below link at your earliest convenience.  One at their store website, click on 'NHS Recognition Merchandise' on the right of the screen. Then scroll down. You will see NHS Carolina Blue Pendant Stole (for seniors who have been in NHS for 3+ semesters) and NHS Honor Cord Blue/Gold (for seniors who have been in NHS for 2 semesters). As always, if you have any questions regarding NHS graduation recognition, please email Mrs. Flynn.

- SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS:  Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus closures, NHS officers were unable to host fundraisers to fund any scholarships for graduating GVHS NHS seniors this year. Please accept our sincere apologies.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Welcome.  As a charter-certified institution of the National Honor Society, Golden Valley High School is proud to recognize our student members for their exceptional achievements. GVHS NHS students are not only academically remarkable, but also socially active, responsible individuals who are committed to serving their peers and community.

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students.  More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.  These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

Today, more than one million students participate in NHS activities.  NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U. S. territories, and Canada.  Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

It is GVHS's NHS purpose to build character, extend awareness of scholarship, build leadership skills, and serve the school and community.  As such, we look forward to our students' contributions and success on and off campus in the years to come.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY PLEDGE

I pledge to myself to uphold the high purposes of the National Honor Society to which I have been selected.  I will be true to the principles for which it stand.  I will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, leadership, and character.
