On March 29, cadets from the Golden Valley High School Air Force JROTC went on a field trip to the USS Iowa Battleship museum in San Pedro. Cadets explored the ship on a fully guided tour and learned about its history. Built in Brooklyn Naval Yards in New York and launched on August 27, 1942, the USS Iowa was one of the newest battleships built for World War II. The USS Iowa was used as a flagship during WWII and carried President Franklin Roosevelt across the Atlantic Ocean earning it the nickname “The Battleship of Presidents.” During the tour, cadets even got to see the bathtub that was specifically installed for President Roosevelt. Cadets also got to see the battleships 16 inch cannons that gave it the name, “Big Stick,” a reference to the quote from the other President Roosevelt. The experience served as an inspiration for cadets considering a career in the Navy.
