Announcement on AOWs and College Portfolios

AOWs:

I have decided that I will not assign any more AOWs for this semester. AOWs will resume next semester.

College Portfolios:

In place of no more AOWs, I want you to work diligently each week on your college portfolios that are due by December 3rd. You now only have  Please do not slack on these; there is a reason why I am giving you this much time to finish them- they are harder than you think once you actually try to type out your statement. It requires extensive reflection and thought before you can put it together.

Tips on Personal Statements

Ask yourselves the following:

-Is it specific, or am I being too broad and/or cramming in too many ideas onto one paper? Remember, this is not your whole life story you are giving to them. They simply want a detailed snapshot to get to know you better.

-Is my grammar/spelling correct? Does it flow smoothly when read aloud? Will my audience (the college/university YOU desire to get accepted to)  read this and be impressed by my English conventions? READ ALOUD! Guaranteed, you will catch any errors you have when you read aloud.

-Am I revealing to my audience exactly who I am? Am I allowing myself to be truthful and vulnerable? The more real and raw you are, the more your audience will be able to feel connected to you, and as a result, the audience may be more moved to want you to be a part of their campus.

-Am I being persuasive? Think about all the RHETORICAL STRATEGIES we have been going over- how can you play with the English language to PERSUADE the audience in order to reach your purpose?

-Through my personal statement, am I showing my audience (the college/university YOU desire to get accepted to) that I would be a great fit and addition for the school I am applying to?
