Mod Civ - Periods 3, 5 Assignments

Week of April 8-12
* I apologize for not keeping up with the posting this week. I have been struggling with a cold and am also a single parent while my husband is out of town for work. As a result, I have not been keeping up with grading or my website as much as I would like. I should be able to get everything caught up over the weekend so we'll be back on track.

* This week students have been working through changes in China after WWII and wrapping up the Cold War. They have been working on the CST Review - Cluster 5 the past few days in preparation for their Benchmark Exam on this cluster on MONDAY!!! The CST Review - Cluster 5 is due when they come in to class on Monday to take the test.

HOMEWORK
I have not been giving any homework beyond their work on the CST Review Packets. With STAR testing looming next week (the CST in History is on Thursday), Students have received reviews of the CA Standards so they can prepare for the STAR test. As of Friday afternoon, they should have turned in Clusters 1 & 2 which I will grade over the weekend. They have also received Clusters 3 & 5. Cluster 5 is due Monday and Cluster 3 is due on Wednesday. I did not give them a review for Cluster 4 (Russian Revolution and WWII) because we did a thorough review of this cluster after the last benchmark. Students will get those review packets back to help them study for the CST.

1) Warm-Up: Cuban Missile Crisis Introduction (see handout and video link below)
2) Cold War Hot Spot: Cuban Missile Crisis (students worked in groups to create a timeline summarizing the 13 days of the Cuban Missile Crisis based on handouts provided from the Kennedy Presidential Museum. Tomorrow we will look at news stories that contradict the official timeline of events.

Thursday 3/7 Agenda
Students worked individually today on their Benchmark Extra Credit assignment. They will have one more class day to work on it before it gets turned in. Whatever they have completed accurately at that point will decide how much extra credit they earn on the test. NO ADDITIONAL HOMEWORK! However, each student was handed a grade report with assignments highlighted that they could complete in order to raise their grade. All of those assignments and warm-ups are attached below.

Wednesday 3/6 Agenda
Today we continued working in groups on the Extra Credit for the Benchmark Exam for Cluster 4. Ten multiple choice questions were added to their packet which they will have until Friday in class to complete. Same as yesterday, I will not be posting this online since it can not be available for students outside of their regular class time.

Homework: None unless students are improving their previous notebook score.

Tuesday 3/5 Agenda
In a change of plans I decided to not have students complete the WWII poster project. However, they turned in last nights homework assignment (list of 10 key facts) as a warm-up grade.

Instead of the project, students are working in groups on an extra credit assignment for the Benchmark Exam. The assignment has them going in to detail on the short answer questions and a small portion of the multiple choice questions. By having students re-address these questions, it is hoped that the same mistakes will not be made in the future. In addition, if students thoroughly and accurately complete the assignment over the next three days, they can earn up to 50% of their points back on their exam score.

This will be an IN CLASS assignment that students will not be able to take home since it involves test questions that some students are still finishing. For that same reason, I will NOT be posting the assignment on this page.

Monday 3/4 Agenda
1) Passed out notebook grading results and updated grade reports with the benchmark scores included.
2) Students completed a reflection on their work for the benchmark and notebook.

Voluntary intervention this week at lunch for any student that wants to improve their notebook score!

Students were given a topic about WWII which they will be researching to complete their next ESLA - a poster of their WWII topic. Details on the ESLA will be given tomorrow but tonight students were asked to research 10 key facts about their topic and bring them to class tomorrow.

Students had the class period to finish any work they needed to get done in their notebooks in order to prepare them for grading. All notebooks were turned in at the end of the period.

1) Warm-Up (Holocaust Preview Activity) - 3rd period will do this tomorrow since we didn't get to it today
2) Group Activity - Holocaust Research and Analysis: Students worked in groups using a handout provided to answer questions about the historical roots of the Jewish people and the foundations of anti-Semitism. This will lead in to further research and analysis of the Holocaust tomorrow. Students were required to answer at least questions 1-21 before leaving class.
3) If they finished early, students could work on their notebooks in preparation for the Benchmark test and Notebook Assessment this week.

* The date of the Benchmark Exam for Cluster 4 AND the Notebook Assessment has been changed to Thursday 2/28 *

Students should be working this week on making sure everything is complete in their notebook so they can earn the most points possible when they are collected on Thursday. 1) Warm-Up: Divide a piece of lined paper in half. On the top half, write a paragraph describing what you think is the MOST IMPORTANT battle of war in Europe. On the bottom half, write a paragraph describing what you think the MOST IMPORTANT battle of the war in the Pacific. Each paragraph should be a minimum of 5 sentences and include a thorough description of the battle as well as a justification of why you think it is the most important.
2) Graded all of the WWII Illustrated Timeline.

Tuesday 2/19 Agenda
I apologize for the delay in posting from last week. I was absent on Wednesday and Thursday so I did not get a chance to update the website.

Today in class students organized notebooks since we have not pasted work in to their notebooks in quite some time. This gave me a chance to update their grades and get some work returned to them. The Table of Contents is attached so they can get caught up.

In addition, students watched a short video (Crash Course World History - World War II) and took Cornell notes on what they saw. I have provided the link below in case students were absent or did not catch parts of the video. It is also a great review before their next test.

While I was gone last week, students worked on a World War II illustrated timeline. The first two pages of that are due tomorrow and will be graded. I have attached the work in case a student needs it. For each topic, they should write a description and draw/print a visual related to that event. Pictures should clearly depict the uniqueness of the event.

3) Computer Lab - Students completed research related to Russia under the totalitarian regime of Joseph Stalin. As they worked, they completed a handout that guided their research and reflected their results.

Although it is not "homework" because of the weekend, any students that come in to class on Monday with the Stalin handout 100% complete will earn 10 points extra credit.

Thursday 2/7 Agenda
Students finished the group Age of Anxiety Mind Map project that they have been working on for several days. They used the remainder of the period to complete the Age of Anxiety handouts which they had started on Monday and that coincided with the project. They completed the warm-up as homework since it was asking them to review and reflect on the work of their group members during the course of completing the project.

Tuesday 2/5 Agenda
We did not do a warm-up today because students are working on a group Essential Standards Learning Activity (ESLA). These ESLAs make up 20% of the student's grade and are designed to give students an opportunity to show what they know about a topic in a format other than a test. Most ESLAs are completed individually but the extensive nature of this one was more conducive to groups. Students are created a mind map of The Age of Anxiety which was characterized by economic, political and social changes between the world wars. The project is due at the end of the period on Wednesday. The instructions are attached.

Bring in pictures and/or complete background research for the ESLA project.
Any make-up work or improvements must be completed on Friday. Students who are not earning a C or better by then will likely be facing mandatory intervention in the coming weeks. I am available for any students that want to complete make-up work during lunch this week.

2) The Age of Anxiety Stations Activity - students rotated between a series of stations where they looked at documentation regarding events happening between WWI and WWII. As they worked they completed a notes handout that will prepare them for their group activity tomorrow.

2) Cornell Notes - The March Revolution and Lenin (see attached) - as this was the first textbook note-taking assignment of the semester, students had the entire period to work in class in order to practice and so they had time to get work they were missing or finish incomplete work.

1) Warm-Up - Students watched the "Avatar" movie trailer and worked with their groups to explain the connections between this modern movie that takes place in a far-off world and European imperialism in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

I apologize for not having my homework page up-to-date last week. It was a busy return to school and it took a little time to get my classes set up on the site for this semester. We spent all of last week reviewing material from 1st semester and getting notebooks organized. The work listed below is organized by the dates we worked on it during class. Anything students didn't complete during class was their responsibility to finish at home by Tues 1/22 (all students were told I would be grading notebooks on this date).

From this point forward, I will have more detailed explanations for each date as well as links to videos in class and handout/presentation notes students may need. Please email if you have additional questions.
