The curve is decided on
how well ALL students do on the MCQ and FRQ parts of the exam.  Whether a
question is commonly marked correct or incorrect is a result of many
factors: instruction, study habits, question difficulty.

The
rationale behind curving scores lies in my belief that every score
earned is the responsibility of the student and the instructor. If a
problem is incorrectly answered by most students then it is likely that
the fault lies with the instruction. However the fault never 100% lies
with either instructor or student. This is why a curve is necessary.

(The
College Board knows this too. Every year the College Board creates a
new curve for that year's exam.  They use a complicated process using
statistical analysis to determine how many points should earn a 5 or a
4, etc. While I have not personally sat down with the powers that be
within the College Board, I'm confident that they consider similar
variables that I mentioned above plus many, many more.)

Some
might interpret it differently. But the point is that Calculus concepts
can be understood by everyone. We will use these to help introduce
concepts. Then we will do many other problems that will show how
complicated some problems can get. Cleverness and thinking outside the
box is something that you need to get used to in order to solve level 2
or level 3 problems.
